Can a guitar pedal REALLY sound like a TUBE AMP?

In today's episode, I'm taking you on a unique journey - a challenge I set for myself to see if I can emulate the warm, rich tones of a tube amp using nothing but solid state circuitry just like we use in analog guitar pedals. We start off with a nostalgic piece - the Crate V50, 5212, a budget tube amp that's been a trusty companion for many guitarists over the years. My mission? To replicate i...
Breathing new life into this old tube amp, the Palomino V16 from Crate

In this video, I'll do a bit of work on my Crate V16 Palomino. Released in the early 2000s, this amp holds a special place in my heart for its unique blend of chiming cleans and gainy response, sort of reminding me of the classic Vox amps, but with a tighter bottom end. But even the best of gear can face the test of time. That's exactly what happened with my V16 - the potentiometers started cra...

Brian, these are all great sounding pedals...with the guitar on 10. It would be nice to hear what they all do as you roll off the guitar volume. I've heard that tubes running hot in pedals retain a little more flexibility and actually clean up better than their lo-voltage brethren. What say you? - OG who started playing with stuff like Fender Blenders, Foxx carpet fuzzes and Maestro Sound Tanks.

Brian…why not u try out Vox Valvenergy series? I have the Valvenergy Cutting Edge which sort of Rectifier sound. It is amazing tube pedal but it uses the NuTube instead of the typical preamp tubes. The series has another 3 version, namely a Marshall, the AC30 & i can’t remember the 4th version. Another awesome gain pedal with preamp tube that is awesome is the AMT SS11A or SS11B. I use to have the SS11A but i had to sell it off a few years ago due to me needing some cash. Nowadays, i use Strymon Riverside for all of my mid to low gain drives (the Riverside is also MIDIed to the Boss MS3, so i can save & recall up to 300 presets sounds of the Riverside!)… while for hi gain, i use the Vox Valvenergy Cutting Edge. In front of both pedals, i have Blackstar Dept 10 Boost, which i use at certain time to get even more tone variations. The Blackstar Dept 10 Boost is placed in loop #1 of my Boss MS3, multi effects/loop switcher. While the Strymon Riverside is in loop #2 & the Vox Valvenergy Cutting Edge in loop #3.

Why tube pedals went out of fashion: 1 - The rise of the pedalboard. These pedals are too big and power hungry to fit neatly on a modern board. 2 - SS pedal design has improved a lot since the days of the Tube Driver. Cascading gain SS pedals are not hard to find now. 3 - High gain tube amps are much more readily available at lower price points than when the Boogie mk2c was the king of the hill. Want high gain amp sounds? Buy a high gain amp.

Tube pedals into tube amp is the best. Tubes can be great or total waste in a pedal. Depends how you use them. Its like OpAmps vs Transistor, Ge vs Si. It has certain properties and if you make great circuit around them, the pedal will be great. Now to check the video.

I have a Blackstar limited edition Blackfire metal distortion that boasts it runs its 12AX7 at high voltage and isn’t starved plate. Given that it’s a very tight, smooth, liquid metal high gain (the 3 band makes it play really nice as a preamp when I integrate it into my fx router and get the level up) I find it extreme hard to believe it’s getting all that out of a single tube. No matter though. It sounds amazing whatever is in it. Opening up reveals three huge stacked PCBs with as much complication as a full amp head. Secret sauce in the studio. Even cuts through live. The ISF can do the boosted boogie/5150 thing without any extra help, especially on the fury channel and it cuts through like a claymore.

For recording and homebased applications...off and on for 20 years I've had a secret. I've been running through an ART MP Studio with an old 12AX7 I pulled out of a 60s Silvertone radio. It don't do percussion, but guitar and vocals are dreamy. I can't put it down!

Better tone? Tube Amps. No question. Tube pedals can be cool in FRONT of tube amps, but they aren’t even close to comparing. Most run a much lower voltage with much lower headroom and lots of solid state gobbledygook.

The Effectrode stuff is pretty wild. Their "Tube Drive" pedal has 6 gain stages! The blackbird, with 4 gain stages can be as gainy as you want. I've even boosted it with my Kingsley Page and it basically turned into a fuzz. I'm not really interested in the tube stuff if it doesn't have a B+ voltage over 200. I'd like to see a wider variety of preamp and distortion pedals with tubes. It seems like everyone is just doing a Fender Twin style, Marshall style, Vox style.... Where's the Fender tweed style tube preamps and distortions? Bassman? Deluxe? Twin high power? Maybe something more modern, Blues deluxe? Add some switches and one preamp pedal could do Tweed Twin, Black Panel Twin, and Super Reverb all in one shot. It's killing me this product doesn't exist!

I have the Tube Driver as well as the B.K. Butler Real Tube and both are worthy secret weapons in one's arsenal. I highly recommend grabbing the Tube Driver with the Bias Mod; it gives you fine-tuning over the feel of your crunchiness. Also, the Plush Valve Job by Fuchs is a sleeper pedal that is not discussed. I love all three of these pedals with a Klon(e) pushing the front end.

I've played a few tube-based ODs and the one I kept and go back to occasionally is the Maxon ROD880, which was their Ibanez Tube King from what I understand. The jacks are backwards, which I will never remember when plugging into it, has that built-in noise gate you mentioned, and though there's a higher gain version, the ROD881, the 880 nails that Lightning/Puppets rhythm tone at higher gain. While we're on the topic of these things, because this comes after a lengthy discussion with a guitar tech friend who's just started his own pedal business - is there any advantage to using tubes in this type of circuit in the way you describe, where they're voltage starved and act almost like op-amps? Do they actually impart their own kind of sound to a circuit or it is just a fancy way of doing what op-amps do so you can say "hey, it's got tubes in it"?

I like my Behringer tube monster, my B B overdrive, MXR fet driver and the gold pedal with the half horse/man with the geranium crystal and opamp about my favorite overdrive due to being a songwriter and I prefer my booster pedal to be cleanest of all of my overdrive pedals to my least favorite pedal being the MXR made with Joe Bonamassa helping out making it his personal overdrive pedal. I use two 50 watt tube amps, 1 is my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe Mod 3 Limited Edition with my custom handmade cabinets and the T-50 Bugera with my first handmade cabinet. Both use JBL's using 12" speakers (D123e & 2130s) with 2-way crossovers SF-20M. Both have tweeters by Sansui and Pyle Horns. The Bugera also uses Road Warrior's 10" and pushes a nice clean midrange. So half of my pedals go to one amp and the other runs to the second amp. It took awhile to get it to A to B it for stereo out to record to my Roland BR micro recorder and I like it. Too bad that no one really enjoys music since everybody can be saturated where music doesn't mean that much as to buying a record or CD and read about the artist where they recorded the music or read a story. Now you pay a feed for thousands of songs and artists and get bored with today's music. I still do recordings because I like doing that since I was 14 when I started recording. I started lessons at 7 and never could quit. I came close then friends would get me a guitar or hire me for a f students would find me another student. My wife hired a person to remodel our home and after a month he brought over 2 Fender amps he inherited from his uncle who passed away and he gave me one of his amps after I told him about my Uncle passing and what the family gave me. I'm 68 now and with arthritis with other disabilities I can barely play anything like I use too but it's nice to feel wanted so, I'll keep playing. Cheers Brian - pictures are available if you'd like to see this stuff!

I used to have a Mesa V-Twin but never really found a way to use it with my rig. Lat year I picked up an old Ibanez PUE5 Tube which is mains powered and has a "Tube Drive" section with a 12AX7 in it. I suspect that with the main power it is running the 12AX7 at "real voltage" levels. Sounds pretty good though. The same unit also contains the best sounding Tubescreamer that I have, and I have a few.

I’ve never had a tube amp, although I want to get one because I’ve been led to believe there’s a feel to them that you can’t get elsewhere. What I use right now until I can afford one is a NU>X Amp Academy that I run into the Power Amp in on a Boss Katana. In particular, I like their Vox AC30 tone and their JCM 800 tone. Honestly, the tones I get make me happy, so I’m not sure I’ll feel I got my money’s worth when I eventually do get a tube amp even if it is a better experience.

a 6SL7 ( the gainy one )booster would be awesome ....same plate v as a 12AX7, just tons warmer. I guess you could starve that and overdrive it, and it would sound better than a 12AX7 ( at woltage they sound better anyway ) along the boost concept, I guess a switching supply ( well out of band ), could run it on some 18V power supplies..... and a 6SN7 ( the current driver ) could drive more tone circuitry.

I run a tubescreamer 808 into a Vintage Tube Monster and into a Peavey Valve King. I dime the level and tone on the tubescreamer. The drive is at zero. The Vintage Tube Monster has the gain at about three and my amp gain is about 5. I basically use it as a gain stage and eq. The distortion is beautiful but the clarity is definitely there. It makes my two channel amp effectively a four channel amp.

WAMPLER WOLTAGE !!! I think a single tube boost would be ok, if you could make it so it provided Quieter per db of gain. that's all I would want out of one.....well, EQed quiet boost gain and a little pre-compression .... that's it....but not where I would want my signal to break up....a boost could be AC powered, being the last thing on the board.
